Our CMC Markets review

CMC Markets overview

CMC Markets has been in the market since 1989, making it one of the oldest names in online trading. It is led by CEO Peter Cruddas, is headquartered in London and is listed on the London Stock Exchange as CMC Markets plc (ticker CMCX), a FTSE 250 constituent. The company says it serves more than two million investors and traders worldwide and has been building its own trading platforms for over 35 years.

The group's business spans CFDs, UK spread betting, share dealing, ISAs and SIPPs, plus Australian stockbroking. For forex and CFD traders, its main draws are an exceptionally large product list, a powerful in-house platform and competitive pricing through the FX Active account. The official site is cmcmarkets.com.

Regulation and safety

CMC Markets operates through a network of regulated subsidiaries in major financial centres. Key entities include:

  • CMC Markets UK plc (173730) and CMC Markets Investments Limited (948126), both authorised by the FCA, registered at 133 Houndsditch, London.
  • CMC Markets Asia Pacific Pty Ltd, AFSL 238054, and CMC Markets Stockbroking Limited, AFSL 246381, licensed by ASIC; the stockbroking arm is a participant of ASX and Cboe Australia.
  • CMC Markets Germany GmbH, supervised by BaFin (registration 154814), serving EU clients from Frankfurt.
  • CMC Markets Bermuda Limited, licensed by the Bermuda Monetary Authority, which serves international clients through the global website.
  • Further regulated entities in New Zealand, Singapore and Canada, plus a presence in the UAE.

CMC's UK site states that client funds are held in segregated accounts and that deposits are protected up to GBP 85,000. Retail clients in the UK, EU and Australia also benefit from leverage caps and negative balance protection. ForexBrokers.com awards CMC its maximum trust score. The sources reviewed for this article did not report recent regulatory fines. The main risk to keep in mind is the product itself: CMC's own warnings state that between 50% and 70% of retail CFD accounts lose money, depending on the entity.

Fees and trading costs

Most CMC clients trade on the standard CFD or spread betting account, where costs are built into the spread. ForexBrokers.com measured an average EUR/USD spread of 1.3 pips on this account, and noted that it had widened compared with the previous year. Holding leveraged positions overnight incurs financing charges.

Active forex traders can apply for FX Active, which offers spreads from 0.0 pips on six major currency pairs with a commission of 0.0025% of notional value per side, which equals US$2.50 per side on a 100,000 standard lot. Other currency pairs get a 25% spread discount. On this account, the measured EUR/USD raw spread was about 0.65 pips, for an all-in cost of roughly 1.15 pips.

An inactivity fee of GBP 10 (or equivalent) applies once an account has gone a year with no trades or open positions. International bank wires are free. CMC does not offer Islamic swap-free accounts.

Markets and accounts

The product catalogue is one of the largest in the industry. CMC cites more than 12,000 CFD products, and ForexBrokers.com counted over 21,000 tradable symbols, including more than 300 currency pairs, 80+ global indices, around 10,000 shares across 24 markets, commodities, treasuries, share baskets and crypto CFDs. CMC's proprietary currency indices and share baskets are features few rivals match.

Leverage depends on the entity and client status. UK and EU retail traders are capped at 1:30 on major forex pairs. International clients of the Bermuda entity can access retail leverage of up to 1:200, and professional clients up to 1:500 where permitted. In the UK, CMC also offers spread betting, a Spectre account, and Stocks and Shares ISA, GIA and SIPP products.

Platforms and tools

CMC's in-house Next Generation platform, available on the web, Windows desktop and mobile, is the centrepiece. It combines advanced charting with a wide choice of technical indicators, risk-management orders and in-platform news and analysis. MetaTrader 4 is available globally and MetaTrader 5 in markets such as the UK, Australia and Canada. Platform CFD and FX Active accounts can also be linked to TradingView for charting and order placement.

There are some gaps. CMC does not offer copy trading, cTrader, a native Mac desktop application or a retail trading API, and its education is less structured than its research. A free demo account is available on the main platform.

Deposits and withdrawals

There is no minimum deposit requirement. Supported methods include debit and credit cards, bank wire, local bank transfer and PayPal; Skrill, Neteller and crypto deposits are not offered. International wires are free of charge.

Who CMC Markets suits

CMC Markets is well suited to experienced and active traders who want a deep product range, institutional-quality charting and a listed broker with tier-one regulation. FX Active makes it competitive for frequent forex traders, and UK clients gain the option of tax-efficient spread betting. Beginners can also benefit from the zero minimum deposit and demo account, although the platform's breadth can feel complex at first.

It is less appealing to copy traders, traders who require Islamic accounts, and those who prefer to fund with e-wallets.

Verdict

With more than three decades in the market, a FTSE 250 listing and licences from the FCA, ASIC, BaFin and other leading regulators, CMC Markets is among the most established brokers available. Its Next Generation platform and huge product list set it apart, and FX Active pricing is competitive for active forex traders. Standard spreads are average, copy trading and swap-free accounts are missing, and an inactivity fee applies, but for most traders who value safety and tools, CMC Markets is a strong choice.
